Energy Relief That Puts Money Back In Your Pocket

On March 17, the House of Delegates passed energy legislation with strong bipartisan support, reflecting a shared commitment to lowering energy costs and supporting Maryland families.

HB132 – Utility RELIEF (Reducing Energy Load Inflation for Everyday Families) Act is intended to provide both immediate relief and longer-term cost control for Maryland ratepayers. A significant portion of that relief comes from reducing the surcharge that funds the EmPOWER Maryland program , which supports energy-efficiency upgrades, including appliance rebates and conservation efforts.

While this approach may lower bills in the short term, it raises important concerns. EmPOWER has been a proven tool for reducing energy demand and keeping costs down over time. Scaling it back risks undermining both long-term affordability and our environmental goals.

The Utility RELIEF Act does take meaningful steps to deliver immediate savings and improve transparency and accountability in our energy system, steps that are important as many Maryland families face rising expenses. But these short-term gains must be balanced with sustained investment in programs that deliver lasting results.

As the bill moves through the Senate, where debate is intensifying over immediate relief versus long-term energy investments, I remain concerned about the provision reducing EmPOWER funding and will continue to monitor its progress.

Child Care Is an Economic Issue

Child care is a key issue being discussed by legislators in Annapolis this session, and one that profoundly shapes the strength of our economy and our communities.

Research continues to show that when child care is inaccessible or unaffordable, it impacts not only families but also businesses and economic growth. In fact, national research estimates that barriers to appropriate and affordable child care cost the U.S. economy more than $170 billion each year in lost earnings, productivity, and tax revenue.

That is why the work happening in Annapolis on child care matters so much and why I will continue to work with my colleagues across the State to develop solutions to meet the child care needs of Maryland families.

The House and Senate recently reached a budget agreement to increase child care funding by $20 million. This funding will support the Child Care Scholarship Program, which helps low-income families afford child care by providing financial assistance directly to them.

The scholarships can also indirectly support child care providers by ensuring families can pay for care, but the primary focus is on helping families access services. While this $20 million increase will not eliminate the current waitlist for child care scholarships, it is an important step forward that could help thousands of Maryland families afford quality child care.

Among the measures moving forward:

House Bill 849 and House Bill 1321 are companion measures aimed at expanding access to child care scholarships and strengthening early childhood programs across Maryland.

These bills successfully passed the House and aim to:

Codify existing Maryland State Department of Education waitlist priorities while adding priority for homeless children and children under age three.
End “presumptive eligibility,” which has proven costly and often resulted in families not qualifying long-term. Presumptive eligibility allows families to receive childcare assistance immediately based on an initial screening while full eligibility is verified.
Establish a sliding-scale co-pay system, providing full scholarships for families below the poverty line and partial scholarships for other eligible families.

House Bill 561 and Senate Bill 467 : These bills maintain funding for the Maryland Child Care Credential Program at least at the level appropriated in fiscal year 2024.

Senate Bill 503 : This bill complements HB849 and HB1321 by requiring $450,000 annually to support the Growing Family Child Care Opportunities Program, which helps expand the supply of family child care businesses across Maryland.

Rising Energy Costs are Impacting Maryland Families

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Energy costs are rising across Maryland, and families in District 16 are feeling it. From higher utility bills to the growing cost of extreme weather damage, too many residents are paying more while large corporations avoid accountability.

This legislative session, there are three important bills that deserve attention because they focus on practical, fiscally responsible solutions that lower costs and protect our communities.

SB0432 / HB0572 – Climate Crimes Accountability Act would empower Maryland to hold major fossil fuel companies financially responsible for the climate-related damage their activities have caused. The legislation authorizes the Maryland Attorney General to pursue legal action against companies whose ongoing conduct threatens public health, harms communities, and degrades the environment.

HB1040 – Strategic Energy Investment Fund (SEIF) Mandated Uses ensures energy funds are used for programs that actually lower utility bills. By expanding efficiency upgrades, modern heating and cooling systems, and community solar access, this bill helps families save money while strengthening grid reliability and supporting Maryland’s clean energy workforce.

SB0023 / HB0695 – The GREEN Loan Program for Nonprofits provides no-interest loans so nonprofits and faith organizations can reduce their energy costs and stay operational during extreme weather. In District 16, where community institutions serve seniors, children, and vulnerable families, this kind of support keeps essential services running while lowering overhead costs.

Together, these bills are about keeping energy affordable, creating good-paying jobs, and protecting Maryland communities from increasingly costly weather events. They represent smart fiscal policy and responsible leadership.

Honoring Women’s History Month and Fighting for Women in Maryland

This Women’s History Month, I’m reminded of the strong women who came before us and paved the way for greater opportunity. It is a time not only to reflect on the progress we have made, but also to recognize the work that still lies ahead.

Over the years, I have been humbled by the incredible women I’ve had the privilege of knowing, women like my mother who lifted so many others over the years, and my daughter who is caring and kind and focused on creating a space for herself in a world that too often fails to embrace and encourage women.

I have also been especially honored to connect with the many powerful women I’ve met throughout this campaign, including Eleanor Smeal, who has spent her life fighting for women’s rights and advocating for the Equal Rights Amendment, and Speaker Joseline Peña-Melnyk, a tireless advocate and consensus-builder for Maryland families, who has played a key role in shaping Maryland laws on healthcare, education, and public policy. Their leadership, resilience, and advocacy continue to shape our communities and inspire the work we are committed to doing.

This legislative session, several bills are advancing policies that strengthen economic opportunity, expand access to health care, and provide critical protections for women and families across Maryland. While we have made meaningful progress, there is still much work to do.

Below are a few pieces of legislation I want to highlight this week:

HB1280 / SB 809 - Supporting Our Caregiver Infrastructure Program - Feasibility Study . This bill directs the Office of the Comptroller, with support from the Department of Human Services, to study the feasibility of creating the Supporting Our Caregiver Infrastructure Program, which would provide monthly stipends to family caregivers. Maryland’s 1.16 million caregivers provide essential support to older adults and people with disabilities, often at significant financial cost. The study will examine how caregiver support could strengthen families, help caregivers stay in the workforce, and reduce costly institutional care. HB 1280 ensures Maryland gathers the data needed to design an effective caregiver support system.

HB278 / SB113 – The Longevity Ready Maryland Act . This bill codifies a coordinated statewide plan to modernize services the state provides its aging population and incorporate innovative approaches to supporting older adults. Women represent a majority of Maryland’s aging population, including nearly 65% of residents over the age of 85, and 60% of those caring for Maryland’s elders.

HB465 / SB295 – Stop Silencing Survivors . This bill protects survivors of sexual assault from being sued for defamation or other claims when reporting allegations in good faith and provides legal immunity while covering attorney fees for such disclosures.

HB450 / SB294 – Protection of Identity of Victim of Sexual Assault or Stalking . This bill expands confidentiality protections for victims of sexual assault and stalking in criminal and juvenile proceedings, helping protect survivors' privacy throughout the legal process.

HB329 / SB81 – Protection of Students from Sexual Exploitation in Schools . This bill strengthens protections for students by prohibiting sexual activity between school resource officers and students.

HB1076 / SB532 – Higher Education Institutions – Over-the-Counter Contraception – Access and Reporting . This bill aligns program requirements for two and four-year colleges and clarifies the forms of over-the-counter contraception students must be able to access on campus, helping expand reproductive healthcare for students.

HB536 – Employment Discrimination – Reasonable Accommodations for Disabilities Due to Childbirth, Menopause, and Related Medical Conditions . This bill expands workplace protections by requiring reasonable accommodations for temporary disabilities related to childbirth, menopause, and related medical conditions while allowing employers to consider operational impacts when evaluating certain accommodation requests.

House Debate Heats Up in Annapolis

House Debate Heats Up in Annapolis

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

As I meet with voters across District 16, one issue comes up again and again: the urgent need for more affordable and accessible housing. But while there is a consensus regarding the need, there’s little consensus on solutions.

This legislative session, one of the three bills included in Governor Moore’s comprehensive housing package, has sparked strong reactions in District 16. Many of your neighbors are telling me how alarmed they are about potential neighborhood impacts of the Silver and Starter Home Act. Public input is an important part of the legislative process, and there is still an opportunity to make your voice heard by testifying at the bill hearing.

Below is a brief overview of all three bills:

The Maryland Housing Certainty Act (HB 548) : This bill would require housing development projects to be reviewed under the zoning and regulatory rules in effect at the time a completed application is submitted, allowing approved projects to proceed under those rules for a set period even if regulations later change. It would also prohibit the collection of certain development excise taxes and development impact fees until the project is completed.

House hearing is on February 19th in the Economic Matters Committee.

Potential Impact in D16: This bill could encourage more housing by reducing delays and upfront costs while still ensuring impact fees are collected to support schools, transportation, and infrastructure. It could be a practical way to accelerate housing production responsibly.

The Maryland Transit and Housing Opportunity Act (HB 894 ) : This bill is designed to encourage more housing and redevelopment near transit stations. It would automatically designate certain transit-oriented developments as enterprise zones, give priority loans to redevelopment projects, limit how much local governments can restrict development near certain transit stations, and delay the collection of some development taxes and fees for housing projects. It would also give preference to projects that use project labor agreements when awarding certain state transit development funds.

House hearing is on February 26 ^th in the Economic Matters Committee.

Potential Impact in D16: Montgomery County has already prioritized transit-oriented development around fixed rail transit stations, so this bill's impact on Montgomery County is fairly limited. However, its effects could be more significant in other parts of the state where such planning has not yet occurred.

The Silver and Starter Homes Act (HB 239): This bill would stop local governments from enforcing certain zoning rules about lot size, building height and placement, how much of a lot can be covered by a house, and some design requirements for certain single-family homes. It would also prevent local governments from banning certain types of housing in specific areas or from blocking certain property subdivisions. For example, townhouses and similar homes could be allowed in areas currently restricted to single-family housing, and property owners could subdivide a lot with an existing home into as many as three smaller lots, even if local rules previously prohibited it.

Potential Impact in D16: In its current form, this bill seems to be an overreach, applying a one-size-fits-all approach. Several amendments have already been proposed to address concerns from residents and local governments regarding this bill.

Many of my concerns are reflected in a letter from local municipalities, which outlines changes that could make the bill more practical and responsive to our community’s needs.

Stay Safe: Sewage Spill Impacting Our River

I want to give you an update on a major environmental and public health emergency unfolding right in our backyard.

On January 19 , a major sewer main collapsed near Lock 10 in Montgomery County, releasing an estimated 200–300 million gallons of raw sewage into the Potomac River . Crews have been working to contain the spill, but now, more than two weeks later, repairs are expected to take another four to six weeks after a massive underground “rock dam” blocking the damaged pipe was discovered.

University of Maryland researchers have detected dangerous levels of E. coli and other harmful bacteria as far as 10 miles downstream. The current winter cold front is not helping, as cold water temperatures are allowing these pathogens to survive longer, increasing the risk of infection and illness for anyone who comes into contact with the river, and threatening the health of downstream communities and ecosystems.

While local officials say the area’s drinking water is safe, they warn residents to stay out of the river and get tested if they’ve had any contact with the water.

This spill, one of the largest sewer spills in U.S. history, is a stark reminder of what happens when critical water infrastructure is allowed to age without sufficient investment.

Solving this crisis makes it clear that we can't fix this break and say we are done. It requires serious, ongoing commitment to modernizing our water systems, prioritizing resilience, and ensuring that no community bears a disproportionate burden of failure.

The Potomac is a shared regional resource. Protecting it demands transparency, coordinated leadership, and the political will to invest in the infrastructure that keeps our families safe.

As a candidate for Delegate, I will prioritize strong environmental preservation policies and fight for sustained infrastructure investment because our communities deserve safe water, environmental justice, and resilient public systems.

No one is above accountability - especially not ICE

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

What we are witnessing across this country right now is deeply alarming. The federal government is giving license to ICE, whose agents are covered by face masks to hide their identities, to act with impunity. This is not public safety. This is terror, carried out in our streets under the guise of legal immigration enforcement.

In Minneapolis, Alex Pretti, a VA ICU nurse, was killed after stepping in to help a woman who had been shoved to the ground by an ICE agent. Mr. Pretti is not the first, nor likely, if things continue unchecked, the last. ICE has killed nine people so far in 2026. Below are their names:

Today the Maryland House and Senate both passed legislation to rein in ICE’s reach into our communities by banning 287(g) agreements , which deputize local law enforcement officers to act as federal immigration agents. Separate legislation which would prohibit law enforcement officers from wearing face coverings while on duty is also making its way through both chambers. Together, these bills reflect a coordinated, bicameral effort and underscore a growing consensus to increase transparency, accountability, and community trust.

In addition to supporting these legislative reforms, I believe it is our responsibility to ensure that Marylanders are informed, prepared, and safe. I have put together a comprehensive resource guide outlining an individual’s rights if you, or someone you know is stopped by ICE; where people are being detained; and immigration support resources available in Montgomery County and across Maryland. Maryland Must Support Women in the Justice System

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

With everything happening across the country it can be hard at times to focus on what is happening right here in Maryland.

Yet times like these, remind us of a broader truth; accountability, dignity, and respect for constitutional rights must guide every part of our justice system and the everyday laws and policies affecting people’s lives.

As a candidate for the Maryland General Assembly, I believe our justice system must promote public safety, family stability, and human dignity at all levels of government.

This week, I am focusing on one clear and actionable step Maryland can take to live up to those values - passage of Senate Bill (SB) 187 the Correctional Services, Comprehensive Rehabilitative Prerelease Services for Female Incarcerated Individuals .

Women in the criminal justice system face unique challenges. They are often older, survivors of physical or sexual trauma, and have often entered the system through abusive or coercive relationships. Effective reentry services must therefore be gender-responsive, trauma-informed, and evidence-based.

Maryland closed its only women’s prerelease center in 2009. Since then, about 1,500 women have been released without adequate preparation, facing minimal support for housing, employment, and family reunification.

In 2021, the legislature passed the Gender-Responsive Prerelease Act mandating the establishment of a women’s prerelease center in Baltimore by 2023. To date, the state has not complied with that statute.

Maryland’s long-standing failure to provide community-based prerelease services for incarcerated women, while providing at least 9 such centers for men, has had serious consequences for families and communities across our state.

Passage of SB 187 would establish a dedicated women’s prerelease facility with no fiscal impact for the next three years, as planning and design are already fully funded. I also support proposed amendments that ensure proper location and capacity, facilitate service transfers, prevent the mixing of women with men in prerelease programs, and restore the bill subtitle - The Monica Cooper Prerelease Act.

This bill represents an important step toward meeting the state’s obligations and providing gender-responsive support for women in prerelease programs.

A hearing on SB 187 is scheduled for tomorrow, January 28, at 11:00 a.m. in the Judicial Proceedings Committee. Passing this bill is essential to rebuilding lives, strengthening families, and creating safer communities.

Maryland’s incarcerated women, their children, their families, and their communities have waited too long. Once elected, I will continue fighting for a justice system that reflects our shared values of dignity, accountability, and respect.

Remembering Dr. King's by Legacy Standing for Justice

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

On Monday, we honored the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King called on us to pursue peace and unity, without compromising justice. He reminded us that real progress requires moral courage: the willingness to speak out against hate, confront injustice, and stand firmly on the side of human dignity, even when it is uncomfortable.

That message feels especially urgent this week.

Last Friday, Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda was vandalized with Islamophobic and anti-Palestinian graffiti . The words were violent, dehumanizing, and hateful, and they targeted Muslim and Palestinian members of our community. All our students deserve to feel safe, regardless of their faith, background, or identity.

Those responsible must be held accountable, and we must be clear that hate has no home in Montgomery County.

Continuing the work that Dr. King and so many other civil rights leaders dedicated their lives to means more than reflection; it means action. It means building communities where difference is not met with fear, where our schools are places of learning and belonging, and where our leaders are willing to name harm clearly and work to prevent it.

As a candidate for Delegate, I am committed to that work. I will continue to stand up for the safety and dignity of every person in Montgomery County and to champion policies rooted in justice, accountability, and compassion.

ICE is terrorizing our communty

ICE is terrorizing our community

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Last week, our nation was shaken by the killing of Renée Nicole Good , a 37-year-old mother, poet, and neighbor who was shot by an ICE agent in Minneapolis during a federal immigration enforcement operation. Renée was a devoted mother of three, not a threat.

Instead of protecting our streets, ICE is terrorizing them . Militarized enforcement tactics have been brought into neighborhoods and everyday life, spreading fear rather than safety.

Advocacy groups, including United We Dream and the ACLU, report that at least 32 people have died in ICE custody in 2025 alone — a sobering reminder that this administration’s immigration policies are costing lives and destabilizing communities.

Even more alarming, Vice President Vance claimed the agent involved has “ absolute immunity ” due to his federal role. Blanket protection from accountability for lethal force should horrify every one of us and raises urgent questions about ICE’s oversight and training.

In 2025, over 3,300 Marylanders were detained by ICE . We need strong legislation to protect families. In Maryland, that starts with banning 287(g) agreements — contracts that deputize local law enforcement to act as ICE agents. These agreements make people afraid to report crimes, seek help, or send their children to school. While Montgomery County does not have a 287(g) agreement, we must champion a statewide ban to ensure no local police force becomes an arm of federal immigration enforcement.

The Maryland General Assembly convenes tomorrow, January 14 , and legislation on this issue is expected. If elected as your Delegate, I will fight for accountability and champion reforms that keep Maryland families safe.

I’m running to be your Delegate in the Maryland General Assembly, and you might wonder: what does a state Delegate actually do, and how does that role matter for you and your rights?

A few key responsibilities that Delegates have are to:

Introduce and vote on bills about issues like healthcare, education, housing, environment, civil rights, and more.
Serve on committees that review legislation, decide which bills move forward, and shape how laws are written and implemented.
Provide constituent services: connecting residents with state resources, supporting community needs, and to be your voice in Annapolis.

As we look ahead to the 2026 legislative session, I’m closely tracking several key bills that directly affect Montgomery County families. One major effort I strongly support is renewed legislation to ban 287(g) agreements, which allow local law enforcement to partner with ICE to identify and detain undocumented immigrants. These programs undermine trust in our local law enforcement officers and their ability to do their jobs to protect our communities. I will work to advance reforms that keep all residents safe.

In addition to immigrant protections, there are several promising bills with strong foundations that aim to expand affordable housing, fight housing discrimination, tackle rising utility costs, support Maryland businesses, and strengthen economic stability for working families. These proposals have real potential, but they’ll need engaged advocates to help refine and shape them so they deliver meaningful impact for our communities.

News this week: Speaker Adrienne Jones recently announced she will step down as Maryland’s Speaker of the House of Delegates. The Democratic caucus will meet on December 16 to nominate a new Speaker, and the full House will vote once the session begins.

Delegate Joseline Peña-Melnyk has emerged as the consensus candidate to lead the chamber: a seasoned, service-driven leader known for her compassion and unwavering commitment to Maryland’s communities. That matters because the Speaker chooses committee chairs, influences which bills get heard, and helps shape House agenda for each legislative session. I’m genuinely excited for the opportunity, if elected, to serve under her leadership and contribute to the strong, values-driven vision she brings to the House.

Redistricting could well decide control of Congress in 2026

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Redistricting of congressional seats is happening across the country. This Trump-induced crisis is at the heart of our fight to win back the House and Senate in the 2026 midterm elections and curb the power-grab by of the Trump administration.

Republican-led states across the country are caving in and redrawing their congressional maps at Donald Trump’s direction, shifting district lines mid-decade, instead of adhering to the long practice of waiting for the results of each decennial census before undertaking redistricting in 2030.

If Democrats do not respond in kind, we would be engaging in unilateral disarmament and political malpractice. The result would be to hand the GOP as many as 20 additional congressional seats nationwide.

Maryland is a trifecta state: The governor and both chambers of the legislature are controlled by Democrats. As such, we have a special duty to do all we can. Maryland cannot sit on the sidelines while Trump and his minions steal seats and lock in control of Congress.

I commend Governor Wes Moore and House Speaker Adrienne Jones for recognizing the urgency of the moment and initiating an effort to fight back. Del. Jheanelle Wilkins of Montgomery County put it best: “At a time when voting rights, diversity and basic freedoms are under assault, Maryland must step up to ensure we have the strongest and most representative government possible.”

Unfortunately, Senate President Bill Ferguson has repeatedly voiced opposition , warning that redistricting mid-decade is “too risky.” But with Trump-aligned states already reshaping the map, the greater risk is doing nothing.

Rep. Jamie Raskin agrees . In a recent social media post, Raskin urged Maryland to fight back against GOP-led redistricting efforts, writing, “Pro-democracy Americans must fight this authoritarian attempt to terminate the election and capture the government before a single vote is case. Our democracy and freedom are at stake.”

Today, Gov. Moore announced a new redistricting commission chaired by Sen. Angela Alsobrooks, joined by former Attorney General Brian Frosh and Cumberland Mayor Ray Morriss. The commission’s task is to develop recommendations for new maps ahead of the 2026 midterms.

“My commitment has been clear from day one — we will explore every avenue possible to make sure Maryland has fair and representative maps,” Moore said in a statement Tuesday outlining the new commission.

We cannot allow other states to rewrite the rules while Maryland stands still. It is essential that we all stay informed, speak up. Contact your state and federal delegation and support leaders who are willing to act.

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

From an early age, my parents instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility to serve my community. My mother, an educator, devoted her career to helping her students find pathways to use their talents. My father, a physician, spent his career addressing the health disparities that women face. They encouraged me to find my own path to contributing to the greater good, to building a stronger society, where everyone could have a chance of reaching their potential. As a family of immigrants, we understood it was our responsibility to pay it forward.

After living in Maryland for more than 40 years and raising my family here, I’m running for office because I believe it is my duty to step up and face the challenge. We can’t leave it to the next generation, we must take charge and shape the future of our communities. I want to bring that spirit of service, accountability, and compassion to Annapolis.

I know you know that running a campaign takes more than energy and ideas. It takes resources - people power and financial. Grassroots support fuels everything we do, from printing materials and knocking on doors, to reaching voters and spreading our message throughout District 16.

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

This past Sunday, I was deeply moved by the incredible turnout at our Potomac fundraiser. It was wonderful to see so many neighbors, friends, and longtime advocates gathered together to talk about the work ahead of us.

A special thanks to Diana Conway for opening her beautiful home to us, and to Eleanor Smeal, president and cofounder of the Feminist Majority Foundation, whose tireless fight for women’s rights since the 1960s continues to inspire me. Your support and encouragement mean the world. Also grateful for my phenomenal host committee that helped make it such a successful event.

We talked about the future we want to build in Annapolis, including:

Building a strong, inclusive economy by supporting small, large, and minority-owned businesses
Preserving our environment to ensure a healthy future for our children
Strengthening our public schools to prepare the next generation for success
Protecting access to health care for all Marylanders, including reproductive rights
Restoring trust in government through transparency, accountability, and putting people before politics

These are big goals, but they are within reach when we elect dedicated public servants who roll up their sleeves to solve problems, not just talk about them. My experience as CFO of a D.C.-based bipartisan consulting firm, president of the Montgomery County Women’s Democratic Club, and founding member of the Maryland Equal Rights Action Network reflects a record of tackling challenges head-on and delivering real results for people every day.

Of course, getting there takes resources. (Translation: yes, this is the part where I ask you for money!) Campaigns are powered by people, not special interests. Trump’s war on nonprofits is a direct threat to our communities

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Last week brought alarming news: President Trump’s administration has paused the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) – the federal government’s annual fundraising drive that has contributed billions of dollars to charities worldwide for over 60 years. The CFC allows federal employees, retirees, and military personnel to donate to thousands of vetted nonprofit organizations through payroll deductions or one-time contributions.

The sudden pause has left organizations reeling. Rosie Allen-Herring, president and CEO of United Way of the National Capital Area (NCA) , serving families across the DMV area, put it plainly: “The thought of it ceasing could be extremely detrimental, where families will not have access to services that are so greatly needed.” Without the CFC, budgets shrink and communities suffer.”

This is not an isolated decision. It is part of a broader campaign to weaken nonprofits. Already this year, we’ve seen:

● Nearly $8 billion in funding cuts to U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) programs, hollowing out development work that communities at home and abroad depend on.

● Starvation of agencies like AmeriCorps, blocking food aid deliveries, and attempts to install political operatives inside groups like NeighborWorks and the Vera Institute.

● A “pocket rescission” targeting $4.9 billion in foreign aid (an unlawful attempt to cancel funding Congress already approved).

Here in Montgomery County, there are many nonprofits working to build a stronger community, by addressing issues such as food insecurity, access to healthcare, affordable housing, employment skills training and much, much more. When the administration threatens the resources, these organizations rely on, it undermines the very fabric of our communities.

Courtney Hall, CEO at Interfaith Works, shared his deep concern that CFC funding has been paused indefinitely.

“This will be devastating for us and for many other nonprofits in Montgomery County,” Hall said. “Over the past 25 years, Interfaith Works has received nearly $400,000 in support through the CFC. This program offers a vital opportunity for donors to support our mission as we serve neighbors experiencing poverty.”

This isn’t just about budgets. It's about our values. Do we stand with nonprofits that lift up families and strengthen communities, or do we allow political agendas to tear them down?

Chaos at CDC Under RFK Jr.'s Leadership

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Last week, Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, Director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, submitted a blistering resignation letter . In it, he warned that RFK Jr.’s dismantling of Department of Health and Human Services is sidelining scientists, manipulating data for political ends, and promoting dangerous , even lethal, misinformation about vaccines and infectious disease.

Daskalakis’ message was clear: the administration is “eroding trust in low-risk vaccines” and shoving the nation “to a pre-vaccine era where only the strong will survive.”

Just one day later, CDC Director Susan Monarez was fired after refusing Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s demand to step aside. Four more senior officials have quit in protest, walking away rather than serve under leadership that silences scientists and replaces evidence with politics.

Why does this matter?

Because the CDC has courageously prevented/spared us countless deaths, but for the first time is being told NOT to do that work. The CDC has guided America and the many nations who rely on our science through polio, smallpox, HIV, Ebola, and COVID-19. It exists to protect the public, not to serve a political agenda. When scientists are driven out and health decisions are dictated by ideology, every community in this country is at risk.

Public health is about more than individuals. It is about protecting children in classrooms, seniors in nursing homes, and workers on the frontlines. It is about our security as a nation. That security is being destroyed before our eyes.

We can and must fight back, including with leadership that respects science, values truth, and puts people over politics

Here are a few things we can do now:

Call your members of Congress

Demand immediate hearings into the politicization of the CDC and Dept. of Health and Human Services. They must stand up for science, transparency, and the integrity of our public health institutions.

Support organizations defending public health

Donate or volunteer with groups working on the front lines to promote vaccine access, fight misinformation like Maryland Public Health Association , MobileMed , or Maryland Vax .

Women's Equality Day Is a Call to Action

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

On August 26, 1920, the 19th Amendment was ratified granting women in the United States the right to vote after decades of organizing, marching, and enduring threats and violence in their fight for a voice in the democratic process. Though the amendment barred sex-based discrimination, many Black women remained disenfranchised until the Voting Rights Act of 1965 due to Jim Crow-era suppression tactics like poll taxes and literacy tests, especially in the South.

Even after landmark legislation like the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, voter suppression tactics persisted. 105 years later they still do! In 2025, we continue to see court battles over the Voting Rights Act and openly racially-motivated partisan gerrymandering aimed at silencing women and communities of color.

Today, on Women’s Equality Day, women’s rights are facing new and serious challenges under the Trump Administration:

● Reproductive freedom has already been swept away in many states and is under attack in others, with efforts to limit access to birth control and fertility treatments.

● Workplace protections and pay equity have stalled or have been rolled back, keeping too many women from economic security. This Administration is running a concerted attack on women in leadership positions across the federal government. These actions extend to state and local governments, slashing federal support and grants that our communities and essential institutions rely on every day.

● Legal protections for survivors of violence are being decimated, while disparities in representation and political power continue to grow.

Here in Maryland, we are fortunate to have tools and ways to fight back.

In Maryland, we made real progress by amending the state constitution to protect reproductive health care, expanding paid family leave, and advancing fairer wages. But, even as we honor and celebrate past victories, we must remember today is a powerful call to action. Women have always been at the heart of movements for justice. Women's voices and our votes have the power to shape the future. Now more than ever, we must stand up together. We can do this!

As your Delegate, I will continue fighting for these values and for the women of Maryland. Because knowledge is power, I’m committed to keeping you informed about events, programs, and resources that support and empower our communities.

Trump's Power Grab: What the Crime Numbers Really Say

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Last week, President Trump invoked a rarely used clause in the 1973 D.C. Home Rule Act to seize control of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department - deploying federal agents, the National Guard, and ordering the removal of homeless encampments. He claimed a public safety emergency.

However, the data tells a different story. According to the dashboard compiled by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG), crime across our region is on the decline.

Violent crime in D.C. is down 26% so far this year compared to the same period in 2024. Washington isn’t even among the ten most dangerous cities in the U.S.

Despite this, the president is sending troops trained for combat, not community policing, into neighborhoods.

Trump also singled out Baltimore, calling it “so far gone” alongside cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York. This wasn’t just rhetoric; it was a warning to yet another city with large Black and immigrant populations.

Here again, the data tells a different story:

● Homicides in Baltimore are down 28% this year (the lowest level on record).

● Gun violence and violent crime involving young people are at decade lows.

This progress is the result of partnerships and community-driven strategies that work. Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott put it plainly : “It’s not just Baltimore. Violent crime is at historic lows in cities across the country… The president could learn a lot about leadership from them.”

This is bigger than one city. It’s about federal overreach, the erosion of local authority, and the danger of using emergency powers without cause.

We must remain vigilant and united by standing up for the facts, supporting effective governance, and staying informed.

Making higher education more accessible and affordable remains one of the most urgent challenges facing families in Maryland today. Thousands of people are drowning in student debt, with many questioning the value of a college degree.

But here in Maryland, we have resources to help take the bite out of student loans.

The Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) offers a wealth of resources for students applying or transferring to college in Maryland, and to those exploring career and workforce education programs, scholarship and grant opportunities, and veterans' benefits.

MHEC also offers the Maryland Student Loan Debt Relief Tax Credit , with an application deadline of September 15, 2025. If you have made payment on a student loan in 2025, you may be eligible for a tax credit worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

For students just starting college this fall, here’s another key reminder:

The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) opens on October 1.

Filing early is the best way to maximize your aid and avoid any last-minute technical issues. You can access the FAFSA and other helpful tools at studentaid.gov .

Higher education should open doors, not close them with unmanageable debt. As your Delegate, I’ll fight for policies that make college more affordable, reduce student loan burdens, and expand access to opportunity for every Marylander.

Without independent media, our democracy grow increasingly fragile. With a president who routinely fabricates information and distorts reality, and a national media landscape flooded with misinformation, it’s more critical than ever to support honest, local reporting that prioritizes facts.

Local journalism is vital to a healthy democracy. Without it, there is at best a lack of information, but at worst, misinformation fills the void. In Maryland we’re fortunate to have many publications that are doing just that - digging into the issues that affect our communities, and helping residents stay informed with context, clarity, and integrity.

Dear Friends,

Like many of you, I am deeply alarmed by the Trump administration’s relentless, illegal immigration policies and the devastating impact they are having on Maryland families and local businesses.

I’ve heard directly from residents of District 16 - families struggling to find caregivers for loved ones, small businesses unable to hire or retain the workers they need, neighbors living in constant anxiety that they could be separated from their families. This climate of fear undermines the very foundation of our state’s growth and vitality, weakening the bonds that hold our communities together.

I am committed to standing with our neighbors, and supporting advocacy groups like CASA , AYUDA, and ACLU of Maryland that are working on the front lines - to support those who are here building a better life for themselves and their families.
