Why Vigilance in Voting Rights Still Matters

Last Wednesday, the Supreme Court issued a decision that further weakens the Voting Rights Act, a landmark 1965 law designed to address racial discrimination in voting and protect the integrity of our democracy.

The Court’s ruling makes it more difficult to prove racial discrimination in redistricting cases by requiring clear evidence of intentional bias. In practice, this makes it harder to challenge maps that may disadvantage certain communities, even when the impact is clear.

For District 16, this is a reminder that protecting fair representation is not just a national issue. It is local. It is ongoing. And it requires vigilance in how policies are designed and implemented.

The Maryland General Assembly recently passed the Voting Rights Act of 2026 - Counties and Municipal Corporations (SB 255 / HB 350), which strengthens protections at the state level by prohibiting election systems that dilute the voting strength of protected communities and ensuring there is a path for accountability when voters’ rights are undermined.

Maryland’s approach reflects an understanding that strong democratic systems do not happen by accident. They require intentional safeguards, transparency, and a commitment to fairness across every level of government.

I will continue to stand firmly in support of policies that protect the right to vote, strengthen our democratic process, and ensure that every voice in our community is heard and represented. This work is ongoing, and it matters deeply.
